The Denominació d’Origen Tarragona
The historical legacy of the DO Tarragona is exceptional, and is closely linked to the elaboration of wines of recognized quality, from its very beginnings. Discovering the mark that vine growing has made on this area is exciting, dating back to the time when Tarragona was one of the most important cities of the Roman Empire.
Today, the city of Tarragona, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO for its abundance of Roman monuments, is still a good starting point to begin the discovery of a wine culture that extends from the Mediterranean Sea to the valley of the Ebre river, passing through the interior of the Tarragona countryside.
Wines that are a legend
A commitment to the land and the vineyards that, over the centuries, has made it possible to overcome any obstacle, even the phylloxera plague at the end of the 19th century. Good examples are the white, red and rosé wines of the DO Tarragona as well as the traditional fortified wines (muscatels, mistelas, rancis and sacramental wines) that contributed greatly to the prestige of a wine-growing area that had it all: a good climate and good land to grow vines.
Today, in the DO Tarragona, we can find varieties such as Tempranillo, Merlot, Samsó (Carignan), Sumoll, Muscat, Parellada, Grenache and Macabeu, the flagship variety of the appellation.
The mark of Agrarian Modernism
The wineries that make up the DO Tarragona are the result of the drive of a long list of family projects in most cases, or the sum of efforts that historically and to this day have represented the cooperative model, as in the case of Nulles, one of the Wine Cathedrals of Catalonia or the modernist cooperative of Vila-rodona.
